  5. Hey guys, we’ve been following your route so far with interest!. Bet it was nice to catch up with family again! How are the bikes performing and are the seats you chose comfortable?! Hopefully you are not to saddle sore!! I imagine the roads will become more challenging as you go east, so keep us posted!. Anne you mention the positioning of the handle bars has made riding so much easier, is this still the case, even after a long days ride? Look after yourselves and enjoy the adventure!!. Lots of love from all of us in Verwood xxxx
    P.S Like the pics!!

    • Hi Tansy. Yes it was lovely to see family on our trip. And yes we have no illusion about the roads as we head further east!!! So far, they have been brilliant. The bike seats are ok but no more – we just kept what the bikes came with. I thought my in-built padding would be sufficient and I had given Anthony my original seat which was the comfort seat!! Well, we could both do with plusher!! Anyway, good excuse to stop more often. My Rox risers are absolutely brilliant!!! So glad I decided on these. Another blog entry will follow with more info. Xxxx

  7. It was reassuring to hear you only took 3 hours with the Indian visa form – I have to tangle with it just to pass through and the sheer beaurocracy of it is numbing – but perhaps it’s their way of saying they’re full. Maybe Mr Cameron should introduce something like it here but I’d want him to leave first. Brian

    • Ha, that was 3 hours yesterday to get to a certain point, hoping we could complete them on the iPad on the road. Luckily, we had to stay another day to get over the food poisonning, so I was able to spend another 3 hours to complete it and get an appointment in Tashkent! So 6 hours in total!!! But the main reason is not only was I dealing with a bad online form, but we have very poor internet here. When Anthony told the Russian visa processing agency that the visa process made us feel that Russia didn’t want visitors, the lovely lady very nicely responded that he had no idea what loops they had to go through to get into the UK… Anne

My unesco blog you already know, the rest of my photos are on flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/juliac2006/albums < via this link you'll find my photo diaries, unesco, libraries and lots of travel albums. I envy you Namibia – we had a wonderful time exploring the northern circuit, and do plan to return and explore the south. We also visited Botswana 10 year ago – absolutely amazing for wildlife, but pre-flickr for us. Still using film back then and haven't scanned in photos. We went to Savuti, Chobe and Moremi though – I'm sure you will have a fascinating experience.

  20. Hi,
My name is Giuliano Minelli from Italy. I’ve been reading about your RTW. Since I’m planning to do the same trip in 2018 (Canada, South Korea, Russia, Mongolia, Kazakistan and Armenia) I wanted to know some informations I’m not sure about.
In those countries I’ve mentioned above is a CARNET THE PASSAGE needed or not?
I hope my english is clear and for any clarification my email is minoceci@libero.it
    Thank you
    Giuliano

    • Hi Giuliano. Great to hear from you and hear about your trip!! Very exciting. No carnet is required for those countries. Make sure you use Yuri for your entry into Russia – you’ll find his contact in our blog. If you have any other question, do contact us and hopefully we can help. When do you leave?
Happy planning!!! And safe travels. Anne

    • Hi Giuliano, not sure what happened to my response I am sorry. You do not need a CDP for those countries. Check our Visas and Borders section for information on Canada to Korea shipping and useful contact details in Korea and Russia. Have a great trip!

  22. Hello Anne and Anthony.

Thank you for sharing your extensive adventures and insights travelling the world, they are mouth-watering. My partner Georgia and I are avid riders and we were both hoping to make the HU meeting in Boona but it clashes with another personal engagement. We are planning a trip to Eastern Europe next year, purchasing a large van and 2 motorbikes for a years sojourn. We plan to stay in a place for 2-3 weeks and ride the bikes to explore the sites. We have riding experience in Europe, Africa and NZ.

I have a couple questions and I hope you don’t mind responding.

    1) I have dual citizenship English/OZ and my partner OZ. Do you know what impact the introduction of Schengen visa system will have on people such as ourselves travelling through Europe?

    2) Are you able recommend someone with whom we can discuss the Schengen visa issue.

    3) Many of the countries we plan to visit obviously ‘don’t have holes in the wall’ . How did you manage to maintain a cash liquidity to pay for your border entry visa’s registrations and insurance and entries etc? Did the border entries accept Euro or US or did they require local currency?

    4) Was it easier to use your Aussie passport rather than I presume a UK (EU) passport?

    Thank you, regards Michael

    • Michael,

Sounds like a fantastic trip, I am sorry you cannot make the Boonah event but more than happy to answer you questions as best as I can.

      1. My understanding of the Schengen Visa is that it is automatically granted for up to 90 days for Oz passport holders. Note that you can only stay in the Schengen area for a maximum of 90 days in every 180 days. I believe that if you overstay can be refused entry next time. I am aware of an Australian who was looking after elderly parents who was not granted an extension and had to return to Australia for 90 days.

I believe as a UK passport holder, depending on the Brexit outcome, you are currently allowed to stay beyond 90 days in the EU members of the Schengen area. Note that we have both OZ and EU passports so this has not been an issue for us.

      2. I do not have someone to recommend but the HUBB may give recent members experience. Have you seen schengenvisainfo.com ? That and the EU website and maybe smarttraveller.gov may help you with the information you are seeking which could include other types of visa for longer stays. Note that there are specific Australian agreements with some EU countries, .eg. the Czech Republic, that allow longer stays but there are specific rules.

      3. We used a mixture of Euro’s and local currency. If it is not documented in our borders section, I cannot recall what we used. Currency exchange is usually available at borders we also used credit cards in many places.

      4. The UK passport, while a member of the EU, was what I used, Anne has a French passport and used that.

Hope this helps and happy to answer any followup questions.

      Regards

      Anthony

      • That you Anthony for your swift response. I am keen to sort out the Schengen issue as my understanding is that you can only stay for an accumulated 3 months which will excluded persons from moving to another country that is under the Schengen agreement. I think it is madness ,as we will only be travelling not working. We don’t want to invest money in vehicles then find we can’t move from one country to another as our total 3 month stay has expired. Probably we would only stay in any one country for 4-6 weeks, but then move to another Schengen aligned country .

Thanks for your help, we certainly appreciated your swift response. I will follow up with your suggestion.

        best wishes Michael

      • It may be possible to structure a trip that includes travel to Schengen and non-Schengen countries such as Ukraine & Turkey and some of the parts of the old Yugoslavia that are not members to allow 90 days in and 90 days out.
